IHA Annual Conference
Willow Pond Herb Farm
Gettysburg, PA
The 2008 IHA Annual Conference will take place July 19 and 20 in historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with pre- and post-conference field trips. Tour the battlefield, visit the Eisenhower Farm, take a guided tour of the U.S. Botanic Garden and the National Arboretum. All that, and the conference!
Come early and stay late; stay tuned for details for our field trip on Friday, July 18. Saturday, July 19, begins the conference with our Herb Education Day with doors open to the public. Sunday, July 20 the IHA annual business meeting will be held along with a day of herbal programs. Tom and Madeline Wajda, the owners of Willow Pond Farm, will host a dinner on Saturday evening. On Monday, July 21, take a chartered bus to Washington, DC where you will be welcomed by Director Holly Shimizu for a tour of the U.S. Botanic Garden, followed by a tour of the herb and other gardens at the National Arboretum.
Visit three great herb shops within 30 minutes of the hotel. Barbara Steele will welcome you at Alloway Farm Gardens, Susanna Reppert Brill will be your host at Rosemary House, and Tom and Madeline Wajda will greet you at Willow Pond Farm.
Tour the battlefield: The Battle of Gettysburg took place July 1 to 3, 1863. Tour this hallowed ground including the site of Pickett's Charge, Little Round Top where Union and Confederate troops fought hand-to-hand, and the Gettysburg National Cemetery where President Lincoln delivered his historic address.
Tour the Amish country of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where the wheat harvest will be underway with four-horse teams pulling the grain binders. And, while you're in the Lancaster area, take time to visit the Landis Valley Museum which preserves the old ways of farming and where each spring several thousand people attend the museum's Herbe Faire.
How to get there: Gettysburg is located in south-central Pennsylvania, about 90 minutes from Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland, and 45 minutes from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It is about 35 miles east of Interstate 81. Washington's Dulles airport and Baltimore's BWI are equidistant from Gettysburg. Harrisburg International is about an hour away.
July is just around the corner! Stay tuned--we'll post news on our Web site as it happens.
